Today was $10-$20 day for me at UltimateBet.
One common misconception about poker is that the tightness of your opponents increases as you increase limits. The actual truth of the matter is that at most online cardrooms the $10-$20 limit is much looser than the $5-$10. This is partially compensated by trickier players.
My first session I ended up down 12.5 BB (buy in = 50BB) playing very solid cards. In most cases I was making the right plays and getting outdrawn. I don’t think I made a single straight or flush draw during this session, including a monster (pair + open ended straight + flush) draw.
After breakfast it was back at the tables, and I’m sorry to say I lost my temper and berated someone. The final board was a Broadway straight with very little money in the pot heads up and my opponent bet into me thereby increasing the size of the pot enough to increase the rake by $1. Of course if there were no rake it would always be correct to make this play on the 1 in 100 chance that your opponent will throw away their cards when the nuts are on the board, and even though I don’t think his play here was a money maker in that it increases the rake 100% but the pot was only about $50 before the bet and at the $10-$20 limit your opponent isn’t even going to drop this 1 time in 100, maybe 1 time in 1000 while drunk and getting a lap dance. Still the bottom line is that mistake or not it’s not a reason to call someone a moron, so my apologies to this player. The emotional side really is the hardest part to control—and not just for Phil Hellmuth.
